Rocking about what? Hurting for sure
The day before the concert, all ticket buyers were informed via a robo-call that the performance would start promptly at 7:45pm, rather than the published time on the ticket, 7:30pm, so arrive early enough to get through the health screen. The show started promptly at 7:30pm, soon after we arrived, and continued for 2.5 hours including encore. There were no stories told by the band about experiences through the decades. The band’s goal was to give the audience samples of 50 years of music in as little time as possible. Video was kept decorative, with four rectangle screens behind the band, and lights between them. This was an old school rock and roll show. The added challenge was including songs sung by Michael McDonald when he was with the band. No musical or video transitions were used to bridge songs. The show itself was very efficient, but failed to connect the audience with ALL of the music like the band intended. One glaring omission was a complementary video segment somewhere in the show summarizing 50 years of musical production and performance. At the end of the month, there is a pause in the tour until next June. During that time, the band should work on ways to connect the audience to their music, known and unknown, through stories either verbal or through video. Thankfully, I was familiar with almost all of the music played, including the two new songs, but was troubled by one more thing. The sound had been set so loud that it was a step beyond annoying to hurting. Looking around, the majority of the audience appeared to be over 70, many with walking canes, one elderly man was blind and had a guide. It was not until song #21, and Jesus is Just Alright with Me, the start of their greatest hits, that the audience erupted and began moving and dancing to the music. One man with stark white hair and beard kept shouting,” We love you Doobies”, over and over. I can only assume many already had hearing loss. Very strange. The band moved around very little during the performance. They kept mostly to their assigned positions throughout the show. It felt like the band had so much pent up energy to perform in front of a live audience that they thought the songs, which probably do indirectly tell their stories, would through their release of that energy convey how they felt. Unfortunately, only the band lived the stories that made and performed the music. Context is important and does create relevance. Hopefully, they will make the needed fine tuning to the message, not just the music, to connect with the entire audience in the future. Having said all that, the songs themselves were performed very, very well, and that was in and of itself something to behold for this band that was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the pandemic. Oddly enough, they never mentioned that throughout the entire show. Like I said before, context creates connection and meaning.
